I'm sure this still would not be funny to at least one of the participants, but I found it quite amusing at the time...
One evening, as I was driving home from work in Georgetown (Washington, DC) I happened upon an accident. That in itself is hardly noteworthy in a town where more drivers are exempt from the traffic laws than subject to them, but in this case it was two Americans.
It seems that the one driving the Mercedes was turning left when the other one, driving the VW, failed to obey the red light. It was a head-on collision. Fortunately, no one was injured and it was a relatively benign accident.
The funny part was the result of the impact. The VW had bounced back about 4-5 feet and had a small, barely visible, dent in the front bumper. The Mercedes had stayed put but no longer had a front bumper or a grill. Its driver stood there viewing the damage, shaking his head and looking like he wanted to cry. The driver of the VW was sitting in the open front door of his vehicle doing a poor job of hiding his wide grin.
The evening news ran a short mention of the incident because of its impact on traffic. The caption on the early teaser, "VW defeats Mercedes, news at 11."
