Neighborhood tragedy...not a joke.

Shane Miller, a 16 year old neighborhood boy, drowned yesterday in a small pond a few hundred yards behind my house.
He and a buddy got in the small aluminum boat in his grandfather's 2 acre pond around 5:30 pm on Labor Day to go fishing. While moving away from shore, Shane dropped his paddle in the water. When he reached for it, the boat tipped over, throwing him and his friend into the water. Shane didn't know how to swim and his friend tried to help Shane, but he went under and couldn't be found. He rushed up the path to get his uncle who ran down, jumped in the pond and tried to find Shane. After exhausting himself, he sent the friend back to call 911. Firemen, deputies, and divers arrived within minutes after the call and recovered his body soon afterwards in about 4 feet of water.
He wasn't wearing a life preserver or flotation device. If any of you have children, please teach them to swim.
